Bangladesh’s automotive industry receives a major boost as Rancon Auto Industries Ltd (RAIL) enters into a strategic partnership with Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation.
Under the agreement, Mitsubishi Corporation will acquire a 25% equity stake in RAIL, strengthening local vehicle manufacturing capabilities and opening new opportunities for both domestic and regional markets.
The partnership marks a significant milestone for Bangladesh’s automotive sector, combining Mitsubishi’s global expertise with Rancon’s local manufacturing experience. Industry leaders believe the collaboration will help expand vehicle financing options, improve after-sales services, ensure greater availability of spare parts, and strengthen nationwide distribution networks.
RAIL began local production of the Mitsubishi Xpander in June 2024 and has steadily expanded its manufacturing footprint since launching operations in 2017. The company currently assembles and manufactures multiple vehicle brands, including Mitsubishi, Fuso, Mercedes-Benz, Proton, JAC, and GMC.
In 2023, RAIL upgraded its manufacturing facility with a modern paint shop, enabling higher levels of local value addition. The locally assembled and painted Mitsubishi Xpander has since gained strong market acceptance, with monthly sales surpassing 100 units, making it one of the highest-selling brand-new vehicles in Bangladesh.
The investment is also expected to facilitate technology transfer, develop a skilled local workforce, create employment opportunities, and contribute to government revenue through increased VAT and tax collections.
Industry observers view the Bangladesh-Japan partnership as a landmark development that could accelerate the growth of the country’s automotive manufacturing ecosystem and position Bangladesh as an emerging vehicle production hub in the region.
